Wl\l \ Women’s golf team heads for Georgia By Steve Mime Oregon Deity fmsum) The Oregon women's golf team begins ploy in its first NCAA championship ever this morning at the University of Georgia Golf Course in Athens. The Ducks qualified for the national tournament two weeks ago when they finished ninth at the west regional in Tucson, Ariz. The top 10 of IB teams at the regional tournament quali fied for the NCAA champi onships, and they will join sev en teams from the Hast in Athens this week The Ducks will send a young squad that features three sopho mores, one junior and one senior to the national champi onships. Senior Shannon Maier, who leads the squad with a 77.8 stroko average, and junior Cappy Mack led the Ducks at the regional meet with three-round totals of 721 to tie for 29th place l,eigh Casey leads Oregon’s sophomores and is second on the team with a 78 average for the year C',asey hus struggled in the postseason hut leads the team with four top-10 finishes, including a second-place finish at the Bruin Classic in the fall Women’s golf first became an intercollegiate sport at Oregon in 1977, hut it was cut in 1981 as pari of a budget dncision The sport returned si* years later under the control of men's golf coach Scott Krieger Renee Baumgartner joined the program to work with Krieger in 1087 before taking over the head coaching responsibilities in 1989. The Ducks' golf program began to reach a competitive level in the Pac-10 in 1991 when it finished tied for fourth at the conference tournament. Oregon finished fifth at the Pac-10 championships in 1992 before equaling its best nnish ever at the tournament last month when it once again finished tied for fourth place. The Ducks have never com peted in the NCAA champi onships as a team, and current Oregon assistant coach Leigh Hornung competed in the tour nament as an individual last year and tied for 82nd place with a 320. The Ducks will host the NCAA championships for the first time next spring when the tournament is ut the Oregon Golf Club in Portland. This year's national champi onships begin this morning and continue through Saturday. Kighteen holes will be played each day.
